Upgrading a card

MUTher docsMUTher documentation. MUTher documentation — written and kept up to date by us, not compiled from sources like the Madden pages.

Madden gives a card two different upgrade paths and puts them in two different menus. Mixing them up is the easiest mistake to make.

  • X-Factors and abilities — where abilities live.
  • OVR improvements — where Skill Points are spent.

MUTher can see a great deal about the second, and nothing at all about Evolutions.

Skill Points

A card has a Skill Point ceiling, a lifetime count of the points it has earned, and a balance of points you have not spent yet. MUTher reads all three, so it can tell you plainly:

Kirk Cousins has 1 unspent Skill Point — spend it under OVR improvements in MUT.

Program Upgrade Tokens are cards in your binder. Exchanging one for a Skill Token removes the card and adds a point, and MUTher sees both halves of that on the next sync.

The roll is random

Spending a point does not buy a rating you choose. The confirm screen in MUT lists Attributes Affected and Possible Attributes Affected before you commit, and warns that "Skill points for archetypes or attributes will not be refunded".

MUTher does not know the odds. EA publishes no table, the roll is random, and the coach says so rather than pretending otherwise.

What MUTher *can* do is tell you exactly what the roll bought — because it has your card before and after.

What one point bought

After the sync that follows an upgrade, InsightsActivityRatings shows the OVR step and every rating that went up:

Cousins 82→83: MAC +4, DAC +4, SPD +2, BCV +3, SFA +2

Each rating is a pill. Ratings that matter for that card's position are lime; the rest are plain. That is the whole judgement, visible without a sentence: one point raised the OVR by one and moved five ratings, three of which do nothing for a Field General quarterback.

When most of the points landed somewhere useful, the roll is a keep. When most of them did not, MUTher says so: "Little of it counts here."

Only ratings that went up are listed. A rating that fell is not something a Skill Point bought.

The 150-coin reset

MUT offers a paid reroll, in its own words:

Reset Skill Points: Clear all upgrades to Archetypes and Attributes for 150 Coins? You will receive 1 Skill Points in return.

So a bad roll is not permanent — it costs 150 coins to clear and try again. Whether that price rises as you spend more points is not something MUTher has confirmed, so it does not claim it does. This is EA's mechanic; MUTher documents it and reasons about it when it judges a roll, and has no reset button of its own.

Evolutions

MUTher cannot see your Evo progress. Nothing EA sends in a sync carries which challenges a card has finished or what it still needs. A card whose upgrade path is an Evo usually shows a Skill Point ceiling of zero, which is how MUTher can tell an Evo card apart from a Skill Point card — and that is as far as it goes.

So whenever a marker or an answer leans on an Evo, MUTher says the same thing rather than guessing:

MUTher can't see your Evo progress — open the card in MUT and check which Evo challenges are still left on it.

For what the wiki has collected about how Evolutions work in general — as opposed to where your card is on one — see Evolutions (Evos) and upgrade paths.

X-Factors and abilities

MUTher reads which X-Factor is equipped in the slot and whether it is actually switched on — those are two different things in MUT, and a card with an X-Factor equipped but not activated is getting nothing from it. It also reads how many abilities are equipped.

It does not read which abilities a card *could* take, and it does not read what any of them cost in AP, because EA sends no catalog of either. Names come from the wiki as they are learned, id by id; an ability MUTher has no name for is reported as equipped and not named.

This is MUTher's own documentation. For how Madden 27 Ultimate Team itself works — Evolutions, chemistry, sets, the Auction House — see the Madden 27 pages, which are compiled from public sources and carry them.
